Words You May See on Your CBD Label

Posted on: 11 November 2020

Although CBD has become much more popular over the past few years, it is still a relatively new product. As such, a lot of the words and terminology can be a bit confusing. It's really important to know what you are buying and how to use it properly. Here's a look at some of these terms and their meanings.

Full-Spectrum: A CBD oil advertised as full-spectrum has been extracted directly from the plant without any of the other extracted compounds having been removed. This type of product will contain not only CBD but also an array of other cannabinoids and compounds that also have therapeutic benefits.

Broad-Spectrum: A broad-spectrum product doesn't contain quite all of the compounds that a full-spectrum product contains, but it does contain most of them. Often a product carries this label because it was derived from a cannabis plant that contained some THC. That amount of THC had to be removed before the product could be sold as a CBD product.

Cannabidiol: This is just the word for which "CBD" is the abbreviation. Cannabidiol won't make you feel high, but it does help alleviate inflammation, pain, and anxiety.

1500 mg: Similarly, you might see bottles labeled "1000 mg" or "1200 mg." This measurement refers to the amount of CBD in the bottle. You will need to divide this number by the number of doses you plan on getting out of the bottle to figure out how many milligrams of CBD you'll get in each dose.

Hemp-Derived: CBD that is labeled "hemp-derived" comes from a hemp plant rather than a cannabis plant. A hemp plant has to contain less than 0.3% THC to be classified as a hemp plant. In states where cannabis is not legal, hemp-derived CBD can still be sold since it is essentially free of THC.

Certification of Analysis: This is a certificate issued by a lab that specifies how much CBD and other compounds are found in the product.

Sublingual: If a CBD product label says to use the CBD sublingually, that means you should put the product beneath your tongue and allow it to dissolve. Most CBD products are best used in this manner since they can enter your bloodstream through the blood vessels beneath your tongue.

Terpene: Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in hemp and cannabis plants, and sometimes included in CBD products. Some have therapeutic benefits and give CBD products unique scents and flavors.
