CBG: Another Helpful Cannabinoid

Posted on: 23 September 2020

Surely you've heard or read about CBD as it has become very popular as a beneficial cannabinoid. However, CBD is not the only cannabinoid with healing properties. There are many others, but one that is receiving considerable attention lately is called CBG. Here's a basic overview of CBG, another cannabinoid to consider for its therapeutic benefits.

What is CBG?

Cannabigerol, or CBG, is a compound like CBD and is found in both hemp and marijuana. As long as it is derived from hemp, it is legal in all 50 states in the United States. CBG does not make users feel high. Most hemp and marijuana strains only contain a small amount of it in comparison to the amounts of CBD and THC they contain, which might be why CBG has not earned as much attention over the years.

How is CGB produced?

Since most hemp and marijuana strains are pretty low in CBG when mature, growers have had to do some experimenting in order to produce products that are higher in CBG. One way they can do this is by exposing the plants to specific amounts of light at specific points in the growth cycle. This helps stop the plants from transforming so much of their initial CBG into CBD and other compounds. Growers can also genetically engineer plants to produce more CBG. There are a number of high-CBD hemp strains that have been created this way, including White CBG and Jack Frost CBG.

What are the benefits of CBG?

So what would make someone want to use a CBG extract or a high-CBG flower? CBG has been found to help fight inflammation, which means it is helpful for managing a wide range of conditions including glaucoma, rheumatoid arthritis, and irritable bowel syndrome. These are not terribly different from the effects of CBD. However, some people react better to CBG than CBD. There are also people who react best to a combination of CBG and CBD.

CBG also seems to be better for assisting with bacterial infections than CBD, and it may help patients with Huntington's Disease more effectively than CBD.

CBD is an excellent cannabinoid, but it's also work exploring CBG as an option. You may find that CBG or a combination of CBG and CBD works best to manage your condition. Visit a dispensary or order a CBG strain, and give it a try soon.
